Man arrested on sexual assault charges in Bennington

BENNINGTON — Vermont State Police have arrested a New Hampshire man on multiple sexual assault charges following two incidents that occurred in September.

James A. Gathright Jr., 56, of Manchester, NH, is facing charges of aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault – no consent.

According to authorities, Gathright sexually assaulted a female on Northside Drive in Bennington and a juvenile female days later on the rail trail near Northside Drive.

The arrest warrants were obtained after thorough investigations into the separate incidents.

Gathright was apprehended on June 10 in Manchester by the US Marshals Service and is currently awaiting extradition to Vermont.

The Vermont State Police, with assistance from the Bennington Police Department and the US Marshals Service, worked collaboratively to secure Gathright’s arrest.

The names of the victims are not being released due to the nature of the crimes.

Gathright’s arraignment details will be announced pending his extradition.
