WESTPORT — Westport Police served an arrest warrant Friday for Bernadette Medeiros, accused of writing and cashing fraudulent checks from an elderly Vietnam veteran’s account.

Authorities were alerted to the scheme in May after the victim’s daughter reported that Medeiros had written four checks to herself using her father’s checkbook and cashed them at a local bank.

Medeiros allegedly targeted the elderly man, who suffers from dementia, with the intent to extract more money.

Westport detectives conducted an investigation and subsequently obtained an arrest warrant charging Medeiros with five counts of larceny from an elderly/disabled person over 60 years of age.

The arrest took place at her residence at 666 State Road.
