NEWTON — Newton police officers seized a handgun and a significant amount of ammunition from a teenager’s home Thursday night, just ahead of National Gun Violence Awareness Weekend.

Patrol officers, responding to a report of a child in possession of a firearm, arrived at the residence and recovered a handgun equipped with a 17-round magazine and a “plus 2” attachment, as well as a 31-round 9mm magazine with plus 2 extensions.

Officers also found over 50 rounds of ammunition.

The seizure comes at a particularly poignant time as the nation prepares to observe National Gun Violence Awareness Weekend, dedicated to honoring and remembering the victims and survivors of gun violence.

The Newton Police Department praised the efforts of Sergeant Selig, Officer Pellegrini, and Officer Colella for their role in the operation.
