Pelham driver dies despite rescue efforts after fiery crash

PELHAM — A single-vehicle crash on Daniel Shays Highway (Route 202) Monday evening resulted in the death of the driver, despite extensive rescue efforts by multiple agencies.

The Pelham Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:15 p.m., where they found the vehicle ablaze with the driver trapped inside.

A Massachusetts State Trooper, already in the vicinity, had reported the crash and requested assistance.

First responders from Pelham, as well as neighboring departments, worked together to extinguish the fire and extricate the vehicle’s sole occupant using the jaws of life.

A Life Flight helicopter was summoned to quickly transport the victim to the hospital.

Despite all life-saving measures taken by the team, the driver succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.

The Pelham Police Department expressed gratitude to all the emergency response partners, including the Amherst and Belchertown Fire Departments, Shutesbury and New Salem Police Departments, Massachusetts State Police, and Life Flight for their rapid response and aid.

The Massachusetts State Police Reconstruction Team is currently investigating the incident.
