Waterbury woman faces DUI, negligent operation charges after wrong-way driving on I-89

WATERBURY — A 21-year-old Barre woman was arrested early June 3 for allegedly driving under the influence and grossly negligent operation after she was caught driving the wrong way on Interstate 89, Vermont State Police reported.

The incident unfolded around 2:05 a.m. when authorities received reports of a vehicle heading south in the northbound lanes near mile marker 57.

Clara Griffin was later identified as the driver of the Honda Passport, which continued in the wrong direction until reaching Exit 7.

Police from Berlin and Montpelier responded, and the Berlin Police Department successfully deployed spike strips on the overpass of Exit 5, bringing Griffin’s vehicle to a halt.

Griffin was taken into custody without further incident and processed at the Berlin Barracks.

She was subsequently released on a citation to appear in Washington Superior Court, Criminal Division.
