TOPSHAM — Two people were injured Saturday when a monster truck at the Topsham Fairgrounds struck an aerial utility wire, causing several utility poles to topple, one near the spectator area.

According to the Topsham Police Department, the incident occurred at 1:58 p.m. during a monster truck show.

The trucks were using the dirt horse racing track, which included a series of moguls.

One of the trucks went over a jump and snagged the wire, pulling down the poles.

Emergency responders, including Topsham firefighters already on scene for the event, reacted swiftly.

One spectator was hit by equipment from the utility pole and taken to Maine Medical Center.

A second person was injured and transported to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Several others sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the monster truck was not harmed in the crash.

Power was cut off throughout much of Topsham immediately following the accident to allow safe treatment and evacuation of the injured.

Electricity was restored around 4:30 p.m.

Topsham Police are investigating the accident and have requested that witnesses or those with video of the incident contact Officer Mathew Bowers at 725-4337 or [email protected].
