Shooting in Russell leads to arrest, subsequent disturbance

RUSSELL — A shooting incident on Valley View Ave. Thursday night has left one person wounded and another in custody after a swift response by local police and state troopers.

The Russell-Montgomery Police Department said they were alerted to the shooting after the victim, who had been shot, was brought to Noble Hospital in Westfield by a family member around 9 p.m. The victim was later transferred to Baystate Medical Center for further treatment.

Authorities located a male suspect with a handgun near the scene and quickly detained him.

The Massachusetts State Police from the Russell barracks assisted in the response.

During the preliminary investigation, police ascertained the suspect was the shooter and had known the victim, with the shooting stemming from an altercation between the two.

The suspect was arrested and booked, with additional firearms being found in a vehicle connected to the incident.

The suspect is scheduled for arraignment at Westfield District Court this morning.

Later in the evening, a fight involving multiple people erupted at the initial shooting scene.

Russell-Montgomery Police and Massachusetts State Police intervened, separating the parties and providing medical attention to one female who required it.

Authorities managed to disperse the crowd and calm was restored.
