WEST SPRINGFIELD — Two Amherst residents were arrested on multiple firearms and drug charges after a police raid at a local motel, authorities said Wednesday.

Joseph Charles Russell, 35, and Sarah Louise Slade, 32, face several charges including possession of a Class B drug with a prior offense, possession of a large capacity firearm, and possession of ammunition without a Firearms Identification Card, according to the West Springfield Police Department.

The arrests occurred on May 23 at around 1:09 p.m. when members of the West Springfield Police Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at room 53 of the Bel Air Motel at 379 Riverdale Street.

The search warrant followed an investigation that began in early May.

Additionally, Russell is charged with a firearm violation with two prior violent or drug crimes and improper storage of a large capacity firearm.

Slade faces similar charges, including possession of an assault weapon or large capacity feeding device.

Both Russell and Slade were taken into custody without incident and are scheduled to be arraigned at Springfield District Court on May 24.
