1 min read

GROTON — Two men were arrested Saturday after an altercation at Poquonnock Plains Park led to panic when they were seen brandishing what witnesses thought were firearms.

Groton Police Department responded to 911 calls around 1 p.m. reporting a man with a gun at the park, where several youth sports events were underway with hundreds of spectators.

Although initial calls mentioned gunshots, police confirmed no shots were fired.

Randall Clark and Dustin Hibbert were involved in a physical fight before Clark allegedly retrieved what appeared to be firearms from his vehicle, causing spectators to flee.

Both men were taken into custody and released with a May 20 court date in New London.

Despite extensive searches by police, K9 units, and fire department personnel, no firearms were found.

The park has since reopened.
