SOUTH YARMOUTH — A man claiming to be a sovereign citizen was apprehended Tuesday following a police pursuit that spanned three towns, authorities said.

Sean Curran, 36, with listed ties to Stoughton, was taken into custody by the Massachusetts State Police after Yarmouth officers attempted to pull over his 2006 Mitsubishi Raider on Forest Road in South Yarmouth around noon.

Curran, who had three active arrest warrants, refused to stop his unregistered vehicle, which bore an “American State National” license plate, a marker frequently used by individuals associated with the sovereign citizen movement.

The chase proceeded onto Route 6, with Curran maintaining the flow of traffic while being pursued by police cruisers from the Yarmouth Police Department’s Proactive Anti-Crime Unit.

State troopers joined the pursuit near Exit 65 in West Barnstable, after which Yarmouth officers ceased their chase.

Massachusetts State Police deployed vehicle stopping tactics north of the Sagamore Bridge, successfully detaining Curran.
