New London aunt, mother arrested in juvenile assault case

NEW LONDON — Two adults have been arrested following an investigation into a brutal assault involving a 13-year-old girl, which was caught on video and circulated on social media, New London police said.

The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on April 29 in the parking lot of the O’Reilly Auto Parts store on Colman St. Authorities were alerted to the situation after the video began spreading online the following day.

Keosha Muriel, 29, and the victim’s mother, Idinah Muriel, 32, were taken into custody by the New London Police Department on May 6.

The video showed the victim’s aunt, Keosha Muriel, and a group of ten juveniles assaulting the girl over an extended period.

Idinah Muriel was found to have been on the scene and involved in the planning of the assault.

Both adults face serious charges including cruelty to persons, risk of injury, and various degrees of assault, reckless endangerment, and unlawful restraint.

They were held on $100,000 cash/surety bonds each and appeared in G.A. 10 Court in New London on the day of their arrest.

In addition to the arrests of the two adults, ten juveniles received summonses to appear in juvenile court on numerous charges.

The charges for the minors range from cruelty to persons to sexual assault and strangulation.

The New London Police Department reminds the public that all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

They urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact the department directly or provide anonymous tips via the New London Tips 411 system.
