CHICOPEE — Chicopee resident Jalal Williams, 32, has been arrested and charged with the murder of Marquis Newson following a shooting that occurred earlier this year on Springfield Street.

Williams was arraigned today in Chicopee District Court, where he was ordered held without bail.

His next court appearance is scheduled for June 7.

The incident in question took place on the night of Feb. 3, when Chicopee Police Department officers were called to the scene of a shooting in a parking lot on the 0-100 block of Springfield Street at around 10 p.m.

Upon arrival, they found Newson, 34, also from Chicopee, with a gunshot wound.

He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.

The ongoing investigation is a collaborative effort between the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit under the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden DA’s Murder Unit.

Officials have not released further details regarding the motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting.
