Claremont crews battle suspicious fire at Wheelabrator facility

CLAREMONT — Firefighters responded to a significant structure fire at the Wheelabrator facility located at 145 Grissom Lane shortly after midnight on Sunday.

The first units on scene, which included Engine 3, Ladder 2, and Car 1, encountered heavy flames within the office sections of the building.

Firefighters promptly deployed a 1 3/4 hand line and commenced an interior attack to battle the blaze.

Despite the difficult conditions, the fire was successfully brought under control by 01:55 a.m. The fire crews continued with extensive overhaul operations and planned to maintain a presence at the site throughout the night.

Officials from the Claremont Fire Department are working closely with local law enforcement and the State Fire Marshal’s office to investigate the incident, as the fire is currently deemed suspicious.

Support during the emergency response was provided by Golden Cross Ambulance.

As of the time of this report, there have been no injuries related to the fire, confirmed Chief Chamberlain of the Claremont Fire Department.
