Topsfield police arrest four in late-night drug and firearm bust

TOPSFIELD — Four suspects were arrested by the Topsfield Police Department early on May 1 after officers discovered firearms, drugs, and an open alcohol container in a vehicle parked at English Commons off Boston Street.

At approximately 12:45 a.m., police approached the idling vehicle and spoke with the driver, identified as Evan Benz.

Upon observing narcotic contraband and an open container of alcohol in the cupholder, officers ordered all four occupants to exit the vehicle.

A subsequent search led to the recovery of a Palmetto 9mm handgun, ammunition, high-capacity magazines, 28 grams of fentanyl, and 8 grams of psilocybin mushrooms.

All four occupants, Evan Benz, Sierra Leigh, Jasmir Sylvia, and Daason Carter-Hawkins, were taken into custody and later transported to Ipswich District Court for arraignment on various charges.

Benz is facing charges of unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm, unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, improper firearm storage, and drug possession class A.

Carter-Hawkins has been charged with trafficking fentanyl and unlawful possession of ammunition without a Firearms Identification Card.

Sylvia’s charges include drug possession class A and C, as well as unlawful possession of ammunition without a Firearms Identification Card.

Leigh was charged with drug possession class A.

The Topsfield Police Department continues to investigate the incident and has not provided further details on the arraignment outcomes.
