New Jersey man charged in Shaftsbury kidnapping, attempted murder

SHAFTSBURY — A New Jersey man surrendered to Vermont State Police on Thursday in connection with a violent home invasion last October that left one man shot and others assaulted.

Matthew K. Osei, 29, of Colonia, is accused of first-degree attempted murder, five counts of kidnapping, and two counts of aggravated assault, authorities said.

The incident unfolded on the night of Oct. 23 when Osei and another man, Mohamed Hamdi, 32, of Union, allegedly forced their way into a Shaftsbury residence on Twitchell Hill Road.

According to police, they corralled the occupants into the basement where Joseph Maccioli, 33, and Nicholas Baker, 25, were attacked.

Maccioli was shot while trying to escape.

Osei turned himself in at the VSP – Shaftsbury Barracks at 11:03 p.m. on April 26.

Following his arraignment at Vermont Superior Court – Bennington Criminal Court, he was ordered held without bail.

The multi-agency effort that led to Osei’s arrest included the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department, the Bennington Police Department, the U.S.

Marshals Service, New Jersey State Police, New York State Police, Paramus Police Department, and Mahwah Police Department.
