WESTBROOK — Westbrook Police arrested a man late Sunday night after he crashed into a police cruiser while driving the wrong way on William Clarke Drive.

Officers received a call about an erratic driver on Stroudwater Street around 8:24 p.m. Two police officers in a cruiser near Hannaford responded, heading westbound on William Clarke Drive toward the reported location.

They encountered the suspect’s vehicle driving against traffic in the westbound lanes, directly toward them.

Despite activating their emergency lights, the driver did not stop and collided with the police vehicle.

The cruiser’s push bumper absorbed the impact, preventing injuries to the officers.

They subsequently apprehended the driver, who was identified as Matthew McGovern, 45, of Westbrook.

McGovern was arrested and faces multiple charges, including operating under the influence (OUI), aggravated driving to endanger, reckless conduct, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, and criminal mischief.

He was taken to Cumberland County Jail following the incident.

This arrest was one of four OUI arrests made by Westbrook Police over the weekend.
