NCUHS sports roundup: Track and field excels, mixed results in softball and baseball

NEWPORT — North Country Union High School varsity softball team opened their season with a tough 14-7 loss at Enosburg on Tuesday. Key players included Lillie Tetreault, who went 2-4, and Randi Fortin, who scored three runs going 1-3 at the plate. The team is looking to rebound in their next game against Mt. Abraham tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

The JV softball team also faced a challenging game, falling to Enosburg 20-6. Standouts included Beth Pillsbury, who was perfect at the plate with a double and an RBI. Ella Berthiaume and McKenna Bean contributed with singles. Their next match is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Thetford Academy.

JV baseball saw an evenly matched game against Lyndon, ending in a 14-14 tie. They are scheduled to host Mt. Abraham on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

In track and field, Lake Region athletes delivered strong performances at a meet in St. Johnsbury. The boys’ team finished second overall, with Jason Pelletier leading the way by securing first in high jump. Other notable performances included Zander Johansson’s second place in triple jump and third in shot put. The girls’ team captured third place, propelled by Sabine Brueck’s victories in the 100m and long jump. Amelia Larsen also shined with a first-place finish in discus and second in javelin.

The track teams’ success was bolstered by strong relay performances, with the boys’ 4x400m relay (Vincent Mutter, Cooper Wheeler, Levi Brewer, Koyle Dennis) and the girls’ 4x400m relay (Willow Clements, Mara Bowers, Alina Horne, Charli Kellaway) both securing second place in their respective events.
