GREENFIELD — A Greenfield man was apprehended today in New York State following the discovery of an unidentified man’s body in his former Chapman Street apartment on Monday night, authorities said.

Massachusetts State Police secured a murder warrant on Tuesday for Taaniel Herberger-Brown, 42, who once resided in the apartment where the deceased was located.

The cause of death and the identity of the victim have not yet been determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, but the death is being treated as a homicide.

The Greenfield Police Department responded to a call Monday afternoon about a foul smell emanating from the apartment.

Upon entry, officers found the victim’s body on the floor and no one else in the residence.

Herberger-Brown was arrested at Albany International Airport, and the timeline for his return to Massachusetts to face the murder charge is currently unknown.

The ongoing investigation involves the Greenfield Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
