BOSTON — Members of the Boston Police Department’s District D-14 (Allston/Brighton) Drug Control Unit arrested a man on firearm and drug charges Thursday evening following an investigation in Brighton.

At about 6:58 p.m., officers were conducting a drug operation near 1202 Commonwealth Avenue when they observed Jose Reyes Jr., 38, from Fitchburg, who appeared to be waiting for a vehicle.

After witnessing what they believed to be a drug transaction between Reyes and the passenger of a stopped vehicle, officers discovered the vehicle’s registration was revoked and initiated a traffic stop at 300 Summit Avenue.

Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield firearm, a loaded magazine with eight rounds, an additional empty magazine, and a box of 42 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Reyes Jr. was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and distribution of class E substances.

He is set to be arraigned at Brighton District Court.

The driver of the vehicle was released from the scene and will be summonsed to court at a later date.
