NEWPORT — North Country Union High School ninth grader Jocelyn Allen secured third place in the 120-pound weight class at the “King of the Mat – King’s War” tournament held in Hampton, New Hampshire, last month.

Competing in an offseason event that featured thirteen teams from across New England, Allen went 2-2 for the day, winning both of her victories by pin. Her coach, DJ Rousseau, highlighted her adaptability and the physical demands of wrestling.

“Jocelyn has worked hard to get where she is, and competing during the offseason demonstrates her determination to get better,” Rousseau said.

Rousseau also praised Allen’s coachability, particularly after she used advice from an earlier match to adjust her technique, leading to the fastest pin of the tournament in just sixteen seconds.

North Country Union High School is currently working towards establishing its own wrestling program, aiming for readiness in the 2024-2025 season.

As the school navigates the challenges of starting a new sports program, including boosting participation, young athletes in grades kindergarten through eighth can join the Northeast Kingdom Pythons to gain experience before advancing to high school level wrestling.
