Vergennes woman faces DUI, child cruelty charges after Addison crash

ADDISON — A two-vehicle collision on VT Route 22A resulted in a Vergennes woman being charged with DUI and cruelty to a child on April 15.

Terra Fleming, 37, was driving a 2010 Toyota Prius when she struck the rear of a Ford F-250 belonging to Casella Waste Management, which was stopped on the southbound lane near Town Line Road around 1:57 p.m. The Ford was operated by Thaddeus Mead, 53, of Poultney.

Following the crash, both vehicles came to a stop in uncontrolled positions on the roadway.

Troopers who responded to the scene noted signs of drug impairment in Fleming, who was later screened by a Drug Recognition Expert at Porter Medical Center.

Fleming’s child, who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident, sustained suspected minor injuries.

Mead was transported to UVM Medical Center with suspected moderate-level injuries.

He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, while Fleming was not.

Fleming’s vehicle was totaled, and she will be summoned to appear in Addison County Superior Court, Criminal Division.

Assistance at the scene was provided by the Vergennes Police Department, Middlebury Regional EMS, and the Addison Fire Department.
