Inmate found unresponsive in Cumberland County Jail, dies despite life-saving efforts

PORTLAND — An inmate at Cumberland County Jail was found unresponsive in their cell during routine rounds early Wednesday morning, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Correctional officers discovered the individual around 5:45 a.m. and immediately called for medical assistance.

Jail medical staff and Portland MEDCU responded to the scene, but despite their life-saving efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead.

The Portland Police Department, the Department of Corrections, and the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office are jointly investigating the incident.

Authorities have stated that they will not release the name of the deceased until family members have been notified.

An official determination of the cause and manner of death will be made by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office after their investigation concludes.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has deferred all further inquiries to the Portland Police Department and the Maine Attorney General’s Office.
