WEST SPRINGFIELD — A suspect was arraigned Thursday in connection with a fatal shooting that left a woman dead in a parking lot earlier this week, officials said.

Roman Holguin, 37, of Springfield, was charged with murder after police responded to a report of a disturbance in the 500 block of Riverdale Road at 10:48 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officers found Angela Mercado, 43, also of Springfield, suffering from a gunshot wound.

She was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.

Holguin was arraigned in Springfield District Court and is being held without the right to bail.

His next court appearance is scheduled for May.

The investigation is ongoing, with efforts being led by members of the West Springfield Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder Unit.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni extended his condolences to Mercado’s family during this difficult time.
