Two men arrested following altercation in Groton

GROTON — Two Vermont men were arrested after a confrontation on Scott Highway turned violent on April 2 at 2:32 p.m., according to state police.

Gavin Walendy, 26, of Groton, and Steven Chapin Jr., 29, of St. Johnsbury, were identified as the parties involved in the dispute.

The altercation reportedly escalated when Walendy brandished a knife.

Officers noted Walendy appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Walendy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.

He was transported to the St. Johnsbury Barracks for fingerprinting and processing.

Chapin was cited for simple assault and released.

Following his arrest, Walendy was taken to the Northeastern Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury and held on $1,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in the Caledonia Criminal Court on April 3 at 12:30 p.m.

Chapin is set to appear in the same court on May 27 at 8 a.m. Both men are facing court action.
