DIXMONT — A single-vehicle accident on Moosehead Trail Road left an adult female driver and two children with serious injuries on Sunday, deputies reported.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash that occurred around 2 p.m. after the Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a distress call.

Upon arrival, deputies found that the vehicle had veered off the roadway after crossing the opposite travel lane, subsequently striking several trees.

The adult female driver was trapped inside the vehicle and required extrication.

She was airlifted to a local hospital by Life Flight of Maine due to her serious injuries.

In addition to the driver, two young children were present in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Both sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital via ambulance.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office was supported at the scene by the Carmel, Plymouth, and Dixmont Fire Departments, as well as Life Flight of Maine and Northern Light Ambulances who provided medical services.
