COLCHESTER — A routine traffic stop for speeding on Severance Road late Thursday night led to the arrest of a Winooski man on felony assault charges, the Colchester Police Department reported.

The incident began when a Colchester officer stopped a vehicle at about 11:10 p.m. for exceeding the speed limit.

The driver informed the officer that he was rushing to help a friend who had been physically assaulted at a residence in Colchester.

Following the traffic stop, additional police units were dispatched to the scene of the alleged assault, located in an apartment on Stuart Ave.

Their investigation resulted in the arrest of James Perras, 57, on Friday.

Perras faces charges of aggravated assault and unlawful restraint in the first degree.

He was taken into custody in Winooski by CPD officers.

A judge set his bail at $5,000.

Awaiting an arraignment scheduled for Saturday in the Chittenden Superior Court, Criminal Division, Perras was lodged at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in Saint Albans due to inability to post bail.

The Colchester Police Department has encouraged anyone with additional information about the incident to contact Officer Larose at 802-264-5555.
