Child found safe, suspect arrested after abduction in Chicopee

CHICOPEE — A child abduction incident in Chicopee led to the arrest of a Springfield man after a swift response by local and state police on Friday, March 29.

At 8:51 a.m., Chicopee Police Department received a frantic 911 call from a woman reporting her vehicle stolen from 136 Exchange St., with her 3-year-old son inside.

All available officers were immediately dispatched to the area to search for the missing vehicle.

Within minutes, at 8:59 a.m., the Massachusetts State Police in Northampton reported the stolen vehicle passing a license plate reader on Interstate 91 South.

Connecticut State Police and local Connecticut agencies along the interstate were promptly alerted.

Chicopee Police Department’s Detective Unit initiated an Amber Alert while Lt.

Laflamme accessed the department’s real-time crime center software to review city surveillance footage.

This crucial technology allowed the team to identify and describe the suspect, who was seen approaching, entering, and driving away with the vehicle.

The comprehensive network of cameras enabled officers to track the suspect’s movements around Chicopee Center, playing a pivotal role in the case.

Authorities located the child, suspect, and vehicle soon after.

The Chicopee Police Department expressed gratitude for the community’s support and the aid of neighboring law enforcement agencies in securing a positive outcome.

Vadim Vorobyov, 52, was arrested in Connecticut in connection with the abduction.
