New Bedford man arrested for carrying unlicensed gun on County Street

NEW BEDFORD — Patrol officers have arrested a man in the north-end sector for unlawfully carrying a gun.

On March 25, at around 10 a.m., a call was received regarding a man with a pistol in his waistband walking on County Street in the area of Coggeshall Street.

Shortly thereafter, Officer Michael Dane located a male who matched the description provided.

Officer Dane approached the male and conducted a search, soon discovering that he was carrying a firearm in his front waistband.

The male was identified as Jonatas Mendes, 40, of Hazard Court.

Mendes did not have a license to possess the gun, which was a .38 caliber revolver.

He was taken into custody and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

The New Bedford Police Department is encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward.
