LYNDON — A box truck collided with the Center Street Covered Bridge on Monday evening, causing damage to the historic structure.

At about 6:46 p.m., state troopers responded to a call about a truck that had struck the bridge.

The driver, identified as 39-year-old Aliyu Nuhu of Adelphi, Maryland, was found to have ignored the height restrictions and proceeded to hit the bridge despite knowing his vehicle would not clear the passageway.

Nuhu, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident, did not sustain any injuries, and the 2016 International box truck he operated showed no signs of damage.

The bridge, however, was not so fortunate.

The extent of the damage has yet to be fully assessed, but officials on the scene reported visible harm to the structure.

Nuhu was ticketed at the scene for the collision.

Local ordinances in Lyndon may impose a fine of up to $5,000 for such infractions, indicating potential further penalties for Nuhu.
