Groton police arrest man in brutal assault outside business

GROTON — Police officers responded to a serious assault at a Poquonnock Road parking lot Monday morning that left a 46-year-old man unconscious with severe head injuries.

Authorities were called to 618 Poquonnock Rd at about 10:34 a.m. after reports of an assault.

The victim was discovered on the ground and immediately received medical attention from the first responders.

Emergency medical services, including Groton Ambulance, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, and Yale New Haven Medics, arrived shortly after to assist.

The injured man was transported to L&M Hospital in New London and subsequently airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment.

Groton Police notified the victim’s family of his condition.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Antwan T. Strickland of Hartford, was found in front of a nearby business and taken into custody without incident around 11:30 a.m.

He was charged with first-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace after being processed at the Groton Police Department.

The Criminal Investigation Division took over the case, revealing that Strickland had confronted and struck the victim, causing him to fall and sustain the injuries.

Strickland is being held on a $750,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment at the GA 10 court in New London on March 26.

As the investigation continues, Groton detectives are appealing to the public for any information regarding the assault.
