GROTON — A motorist struck a black bear early this morning at the intersection of Main St and Anytime Fitness, prompting a search by local authorities.

The incident occurred at 6:55 a.m., when the caller reported hitting the bear, which appeared stunned before retreating into the woods toward Gratuity Rd.

Groton police officers searched the area but were unable to locate the animal.

Animal Control and Mass Wildlife have been notified and are also involved in the efforts to find the bear.

Officials urge anyone who might spot the bear to keep a safe distance and contact the police station immediately.

Authorities warn that the bear is likely injured and could exhibit unpredictable behavior.

They also remind residents that bears have emerged from hibernation recently, advising that now is the time to secure bird feeders and other potential attractants.
