EASTHAM — A collision between a crossover SUV and a dump truck disrupted traffic for hours on Route 6 Saturday, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 11:15 a.m. near the intersection with Oakwood Road when the two vehicles collided, causing the dump truck to tip onto its side and spill its load of sand onto the roadway.

Eastham Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene shortly after the incident.

The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The operator of the dump truck was not injured.

The Eastham Police Department is leading the investigation, with support from the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Eastham Police crash reconstruction officers.

Personnel from Wellfleet Fire Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation also provided assistance.

Wellfleet Police helped with traffic control by closing the southbound lanes of Route 6 and reducing northbound traffic to one lane.

The extensive cleanup and truck removal process took several hours, as crews had to offload diesel fuel from the dump truck before it could be righted and safely cleared from the area.

Route 6 was fully reopened to traffic by 5 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Eastham Police Department.
