WEST TISBURY — A 28-year-old man was charged with unlicensed operation of a vehicle twice within the span of an hour after being stopped by police in two separate incidents last night.

The first incident occurred at 9:27 p.m. when West Tisbury Police Department officers pulled over the man for speeding at 78 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that he did not possess a valid driver’s license.

He was issued a court summons for unlicensed operation and speeding, and a licensed driver took over the vehicle.

Less than an hour later, an Oak Bluffs Police Officer on New York Avenue observed the same vehicle running a stop sign at Towanticut Street without halting, before turning onto New York Avenue.

The officer, unaware of the earlier incident, stopped the vehicle and found it was being driven by the same individual apprehended earlier by West Tisbury Police.

The repeat offender was subsequently arrested for unlicensed operation and failing to stop at a stop sign.

In accordance with the Oak Bluffs Police Department (OBPD) policy, the name of the defendant will not be released until after the arraignment in court.
