SPRINGFIELD — A correctional officer at the Southern State Correctional Facility has been accused of stealing a wallet from an inmate during the booking process, Vermont State Police reported.

The incident, which occurred on Jan. 28, came to light after a Department of Corrections report prompted a police investigation.

Jessica Staton, 34, of Springfield, allegedly took the inmate’s wallet while the individual was being processed into the facility.

After a thorough investigation, Staton was issued a citation on March 15 to appear in Windsor County Court on April 23 to face a charge of petit larceny, according to authorities.

The Vermont State Police have not released further details about the incident as the investigation is ongoing.

Staton will be required to answer to the charge in court next month.
