Newton man arrested on multiple child sex assault charges

NEWTON — A Newton man is being held without bail after his arrest Monday on nearly 50 charges related to the sexual assault of a child.

John Bird, 67, was taken into custody following an extensive investigation by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Newton and Sandown Police Departments.

Bird faces 11 counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, 17 counts of felonious sexual assault, 10 counts of indecent exposure, and 10 counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

He is being held at the Rockingham County Jail pending further court proceedings.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Child Advocacy Center of Rockingham County also assisted with the investigation.
