Rutland man faces multiple charges including sexual assault of a minor

RUTLAND — A local man has been arrested on multiple charges after an investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl, officials said.

The Vermont State Police, aided by the Rutland Police Department and the Vermont Department for Children and Families, launched an investigation on Feb. 28 following a report of sexual abuse in the Town and City of Rutland.

William J. Barrett, 62, of Rutland, was arrested on March 4 and is facing charges of sexual assault, lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, furnishing alcohol to a minor, dissemination of indecent materials to a minor, and promoting a recording of sexual conduct.

Following his arrest, Barrett was remanded to the Marble Valley Correctional Center.

The investigation that led to his arrest is ongoing, and further details about the case have not been released at this time.
