CONCORD — A Marlborough, Massachusetts man was arrested on charges of second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child following an incident involving a 6-year-old boy, Concord police said Thursday.

Yadiel Ortega Montero, 22, was taken into custody on March 1 after Concord detectives launched an investigation into a child abuse report made on Feb. 27.

The child, who sustained substantial but non-life threatening injuries, was found with his mother at a medical facility in Concord.

The investigation revealed that the child was hurt while in the care of his mother’s boyfriend.

After the incident, Ortega fled to Massachusetts.

An arrest warrant was issued on Feb. 28, and Ortega was arrested by the Marlborough Police Department as a fugitive from justice.

Ortega waived extradition to New Hampshire on Feb. 29 and was processed at the Concord Police Department upon his return on March 1.

He declined a bail commissioner’s services and was taken to the Merrimack County House of Corrections to await arraignment, scheduled for March 4 at the Concord District Court.

The Concord Police were aided by the Division for Children, Youth, and Families and the Marlborough MA Police Department in the case.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 603-225-8600.
