Providence man arrested for DUI, Florida man faces weapons charges

PROVIDENCE — In the early hours of Feb. 25, Rhode Island State Troopers conducted a pair of arrests following separate motor vehicle stops in Providence.

At 12:10 a.m., troopers apprehended Maciel Ortiz, 37, of Providence, Rhode Island, for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs with a blood alcohol content significantly over the legal limit.

Ortiz’s BAC readings were recorded at 0.201% during Phase I and 0.200% during Phase II.

The arrest occurred on Cranston Street after troopers initiated the stop.

Ortiz was processed at the State Police Headquarters, arraigned by a Justice of the Peace, and subsequently released to a responsible adult.

Later, at 1:36 a.m., troopers arrested Juan Lazaro Valenti Mejia, 38, of Miami, Florida, on firearms-related offenses.

Mejia was charged with two counts of carrying a pistol without a license or permit and five counts of possession of large capacity feeding devices.

The arrest stemmed from a vehicle stop on Hartford Avenue.

Mejia was processed at the State Police Headquarters and held overnight.

He was expected to be arraigned the following morning.
