LUDLOW — A vehicle speeding 16 mph over the limit led to a high-speed chase and subsequent crash Saturday night, according to Sgt. King of the Cavendish Police Department.

While patrolling on Governors Highway Safety Grant near the Ludlow town line, Sgt. King, in a fully marked police car, observed the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The driver failed to comply, activating emergency lights and speeding away, which resulted in a crash into a stonewall on Ives Rd in Ludlow.

The operator of the vehicle was not seriously injured in the incident.

Ludlow Police, along with Fire and EMS services, responded to the scene.

The driver was charged with attempting to elude and negligent operation, reportedly stating to Sgt. King, “I didn’t know you were the police.”

The same night, Sgt. King stopped another vehicle in Springfield for signs of impaired driving.

The driver was arrested and charged with DUI after providing a breath sample of .199, nearly 2.5 times the legal limit.

The Ludlow Police Department expressed gratitude to the responding agencies and to the Bellows Falls Police Department for the use of their facilities.

Further details are expected to be released in official press statements by the involved departments.
