DORCHESTER — A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a Mattapan man on firearm-related charges Wednesday afternoon.

At about 1:45 p.m., officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) pulled over a speeding vehicle on Bird Street near Columbia Road.

During the stop, they discovered that one of the passengers, later identified as 20-year-old Travin Parara, was not wearing a seatbelt and provided false information to the police.

When Parara was asked to exit the vehicle, a fanny pack containing a Walther P5 handgun with eight rounds in the magazine fell to the ground.

Parara attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by the officers.

Parara faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

He is scheduled for arraignment at Dorchester District Court.
