1 min read

MONT VERNON — A single-vehicle accident on Beech Hill Road led to the arrest of the driver on DUI charges after the vehicle slammed into a utility pole and became ensnared in live electrical wires on Feb. 20.

Authorities, including the Mont Vernon Police Department, Mont Vernon Fire Department, and Amherst EMS, rushed to the scene following the crash.

The police found the vehicle trapped in the wires upon arrival, prompting them to contact DHART about a potential medical evacuation by helicopter.

The landing zone for the helicopter was established near a local school, raising concerns that the arrival of the aircraft could delay school buses in the vicinity.

However, firefighters from the Mont Vernon Fire Department successfully extricated the vehicle’s sole occupant, who sustained only minor injuries, and the med-evac helicopter was subsequently called off.

The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence.

Beech Hill Road remained closed for an extended period while repairs were made to the damaged utility pole.

The Mont Vernon Police Department issued a statement expressing gratitude to the Mont Vernon Fire Department, Amherst EMS, and Eversource for their prompt and professional response to the incident.
