OSSIPEE — A Golden Retriever was killed Wednesday afternoon when a driver struck the animal and did not stop, according to the Ossipee police.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ossipee Mountain Road and Moultonville Road.

The police were called to the scene after receiving reports of the dog running in and out of the road.

A witness told police an older man driving a white pickup truck failed to heed her attempts to signal him to stop for the dog.

The vehicle hit the Golden Retriever and continued toward Tuftonboro.

The witness described the driver as having a grey beard and wearing sunglasses.

Investigators believe the truck may have sustained damage, possibly losing a headlamp in the collision.

The driver, if apprehended, could be charged with a violation-level offense under the report of injury to dog or cat statute in New Hampshire.

After the incident, officers took care of the deceased dog and transported it to Kindness Animal Hospital.

The dog’s owner has been notified of the tragic event, police confirmed.
