SWANTON — A 19-year-old man was injured in a shooting incident in Swanton early Saturday morning during an apparent altercation, Vermont State Police said.

Cooper Bergeron was transported by private vehicle to Northwest Medical Center in St. Albans after the incident, which took place around 1:05 a.m. off US RT 7.

He suffered a gunshot wound but the injury is not considered life-threatening, authorities reported.

Bergeron was later transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center for further treatment.

Following an extensive investigation, Tyshane Smith, 21, of Winooski, has been cited as the primary suspect in the case.

Smith is scheduled to appear in the Franklin County Superior Court – Criminal Division on Feb. 7 to face charges of aggravated assault and attempted burglary.

Additionally, Dakota Beams, 22, of South Burlington, has been identified as an accomplice and is currently wanted for questioning related to the incident.

Police believe the shooting stemmed from a confrontation with individuals who fled the scene and stress that this was not a random act of violence but appears to be an isolated event.

The Vermont State Police are urging anyone with information that could aid in the investigation to contact the St. Albans Barracks at 802-524-5993.
