SALEM — A serious two-vehicle collision on I-93 South claimed the life of a driver near the Massachusetts state line on Feb. 1.

New Hampshire State Police Troop B responded to the crash around 4:25 p.m. at mile marker 0.2, just before the heavy traffic of the evening commute.

A black 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe failed to slow down in time and collided with a blue 2020 Chevrolet Trax.

Salem Fire Department personnel attempted life-saving measures on the Chevrolet driver, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident prompted a full closure of the southbound lanes south of Exit 1.

Traffic was diverted off the exit, with vehicles caught between exits being rerouted onto the northbound lanes.

The interstate was reopened to traffic after three hours.

The NH State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, along with the Salem Fire Department and the NH Department of Transportation, assisted Troop B at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation.

Authorities have urged witnesses or those with information to contact Trooper Madelynn Davis at (603) 451-9782.
