Two arrested in Lawrence altercation, one adult and one infant injured

LAWRENCE — Following a violent altercation on Newbury Street yesterday at around 4 p.m., Lawrence Police have taken two suspects into custody, authorities said.

Responding officers found an adult male with multiple stab wounds and an infant who was also hurt, though not by stabbing.

The Lawrence Police Patrol and Detectives Units, along with the Essex County District Attorney’s Office State Police Detective Unit, are investigating the incident, which they believe was not random.

Santo Simon Tejeda Hernandez, 27, of Lawrence, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.

He was arraigned today in Lawrence District Court.

Luis Lara Rodriguez, 38, also from Lawrence, faces charges of assault and battery on a child, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

He was arraigned and remains in custody at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.

The condition of the victims has not been disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing.

Detective Thomas M. Cuddy, Special Assistant to the Chief/PIO, has urged anyone with information to come forward.
