Claremont driver arrested for hit-and-run involving pedestrian

CLAREMONT — A man was arrested late Tuesday night after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his truck and fleeing the scene, according to Claremont Safety Services.

Authorities responded to the incident at the intersection of Bowen and Washington Streets around 9 p.m. where they found a 71-year-old resident injured after being struck by a white GMC truck.

The victim was transported to Valley Regional Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Within an hour after the accident, Claremont police located the suspect vehicle on Pleasant Street.

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Robert Johnson of Newport, New Hampshire, was taken into custody.

Johnson faces charges including Conduct After an Accident and Reckless Conduct, both felonies, as well as Vehicular Assault.
