Essex child approached by stranger, police increase school patrols

ESSEX — After a suspicious incident near the 5 Corners area, where a 6th-grade student was approached by an unknown male offering a ride, Essex Police Department has intensified patrols around local schools.

The encounter occurred at approximately 3:53 p.m. on Jan. 25, when the student was on his way to an afterschool program.

Upon being offered a ride by the male, the child ran to the afterschool program’s location and immediately reported the incident to the staff.

Responding officers gathered a description of the suspect from the child, describing him as an older white male, possibly in his 60s, driving a black sedan.

No further details were able to be provided.

The Essex Police Department is actively investigating the event to ascertain the identity of the individual and any possible connections to similar recent reports in Burlington.

As a precaution, additional personnel will be deployed to patrol the vicinities of the schools this afternoon.
