Swanton man located after reported missing during ice fishing trip on Lake Champlain

SWANTON — A search earlier for Kyle Staples, 32, of Swanton, who did not return from an ice fishing trip on Missisquoi Bay in the Lake Champlain area, ended happily when he was located safe and in good health by a Border Patrol Agent off Campbell Bay Road.

Staples was dropped off at the West Swanton Fishing Access around 9 a.m. today and was expected back at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to authorities.

When he failed to return, a family member contacted the police.

During the search, a family member spoke with three other ice fishermen, whose identities have not been disclosed.

They reported seeing Staples at around 1 p.m., walking north toward the Canadian border.

Multiple police, fire, and rescue agencies are participated in the search efforts.
