Drunk driver in Providence hits state police cruisers, injuring troopers

PROVIDENCE — Joseph L. Giudici, 40, of Johnston, RI, was arrested on charges of Driving Under the Influence following a collision involving two Rhode Island State Police cruisers on Saturday night, which resulted in minor injuries to two troopers.

The incident occurred around 1:14 AM on Route 6 West in Providence.

Three state police cruisers were stationed with emergency lights on for road debris clearance from a previous accident.

Giudici’s vehicle sideswiped one cruiser and then hit the rear bumper and passenger side of a second, causing significant damage.

Both troopers received medical attention for minor injuries at Rhode Island Hospital and were later discharged. Giudici also received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigations at the scene and hospital indicated signs of impairment in Giudici, who consented to a blood test.

Charges against him include Driving Under the Influence, two counts of Driving to Endanger Resulting in Personal Injuries, and Reckless Driving.

His court appearance is scheduled for February 1, 2024, in the 6th District Court.
