SPRINGFIELD — Detectives from the local Narcotic Unit arrested two men, David Cooney and Douglas Campbell, on drug charges Thursday after responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

At approximately 4:44 p.m., detectives arrived at the parking lot of 1 Springfield St., where they found a black VW SUV with two male occupants allegedly using and distributing narcotics.

Upon seeing the unmarked cruiser’s emergency lights, both men appeared to reach toward the vehicle’s floor, prompting detectives to approach and demand they show their hands.

Initially refusing to comply, the suspects, after several minutes, placed their hands on the dashboard.

Cooney, 43, and Campbell, 59, both from Chicopee, were then removed from the vehicle.

A frisk revealed over 200 baggies of suspected heroin, five bags of what appears to be crack cocaine, and more than $2,000 in cash.

Cooney was charged with possession to distribute a Class A drug subsequent offense and possession to distribute a Class B drug subsequent offense.

Campbell was charged with possession to distribute a Class A drug and had an outstanding warrant.

Both men are currently in custody as the investigation continues.
